Fundraising Effectiveness Project Surveys

Thank you for participating in the annual Fundraising Effectiveness Project (FEP) Surveys.

The surveys began in 2006 for 2004-2005, which provided the baseline FEP data. Information submitted before March each year is included in the Annual Fundraising Effectiveness Report. However, the FEP surveys from 2004-2005 forward remain open in order for the FEP Fundraising Performance Database to be as comprehensive as possible.

All of the information you provide will be kept strictly confidential and will be reported in aggregate form only.

Note: Before completing this survey on-line, please contact your donor software provider who may have downloadable, user-friendly software available for responding to the survey. See list of participating firms below that are developing such software.

Because you cannot save a partially completed survey and return to it at a later time for completion, you need to organize the data for all 56 fields off-line before you begin. However, you can print this webpage to review the questions prior to beginning the survey.

Important: Financial data entries (i.e., fields 16-56) must be in local currency based on country code provided in field 7b.

To make it easier to respond, refer your donor software provider to this URL and ask the firm if it can provide you with guidance on how to use its software to provide the giving data required for fields 17-56. Participating donor software firms that have been assisting with the design of the FEP annual surveys and are ready to help their clients respond (as of July 2008) include:

Compass Technology
Donor2/Campus Management Corporation
DonorPerfect Fundraising Software
eTapestry
GiftWorks (Mission Research)
MatchMaker FundRaising Software
Metafile (Resultsplus)
PhilanthrAppeal (FundTrack Software)
PledgeMaker (SofTrek)
The Raiser's Edge (Blackbaud)
ROI Solutions
Sage Software
Telosa Software (Exceed!)

If your firm can't help you, you will find detailed instructions for responding on your own by going to

In addition, you and/or your software provider may email FEP@afpnet.org with any questions about the survey and responding to it.

Growth-in-Giving data are for any two consecutive 12-month periods, where the latest year (field 11 -- "Period 2") results by gain/loss categories are compared to results in the prior year (field 10 -- "Period 1").  Calendar-year data are preferred.  For example, to respond with 2006-2007 data, the preferred period ending dates would be "12/31/2006" for Period 1 and "12/31/2007" for Period 2.  Enter the two calendar-year period ending dates in fields 10 and 11.  If you are unable to use calendar-year period ending dates for extracting giving data for fields 17 to 55, enter the period ending dates that you can use.

Tenths are permitted (e.g., 1.6). The system will not allow you to leave fields blank. If you do not know the answer, enter three zeros (e.g., 000).

Part III -- Software Extract of Growth-in-Giving Data From Here On

Participating donor software firms are developing queries software modules that will extract the required data for fields 17-57 from their clients' donor databases according to the Gain/Loss criteria.

Note: Include cash gifts, pledge payments, recurring gift payments, gifts of marketable securities, and the contribution portion of special event income. Count these gifts whether unrestricted or restricted. Exclude pledges and pledge balances, all in-kind donations such as equipment, materials, personal services or use of facilities, deferred gifts such as known bequests and charitable remainder trusts or annuities, and the costs-benefiting-donors portion of special event income.
